Issue #6

Station openings and title winners.

Welcome to The Prestonian, a fortnightly newsletter that brings you all the ins and outs of Preston and it's local surroundings.

We are a group of creatives who want to share our love and passion for the northern suburbs. We'll be covering a whole host of topics ranging from local news to food reviews to local sports. Everything Preston, always.

Meet our editor

Sezer is a creative writing wiz who specialises in putting words onto a page. He moved to Preston at the start of the year and fell in love with the suburb. You can see him walking his dog, Ramsay, up and down High Street.

He works as the social media marketing manager for Digital Basis, a Preston-based digital agency that has thrown its support behind The Prestonian.

What are we covering in this issue?

We've got the block party at Preston Market, another addition to Burgers of Preston, a championship team and a huge festival put on by Darebin Arts!

Block Party at Preston Market

Preston Market

The Preston Market has been blessing us with some fantastic events in recent months, and the upcoming block party to celebrate the opening of Preston station looks like it going to be another to add to the list!

In partnership with Moon Dog Brewery, the block party will play host to DJs, dancers, pop-up stalls and more. With food and music aplenty, this a community day to bring everyone together at one of our favourite Preston locations.

Starting at 11am and running until 3pm, the block party should be an experience all locals will want to be a part of. A fun filled day for all ages as we celebrate the opening of the newly renovated Preston station.

We'll see you there!

When: Sunday 11th of September - 11am to 3pm.

Burgers of Preston

The Tallboy and Moose Smash Burger

We return for another instalment of Burgers of Preston and this time we're giving the $19 Burger & Beer special at Tallboy and Moose a crack.

Brewpubs are great since they offer the comfort of a pub mixed with the fun of a bar, a mix of classic and contemporary. It's no wonder that Tallboy has customers coming back every week to enjoy the space.

Our office is a solid, ten-minute walk from the brewpub, and unfortunately for us, it was raining. But we wouldn't let that ruin our excitement to try the new Wednesday night special at Tallboy.

We love to keep it simple here at The Prestonian, you could serve a burger stacked with crazy ingredients, and we'd still go straight for a classic cheeseburger instead. The burger from Tallboy is a smash burger, one of our favourites. A perfectly grilled beef patty, topped with cheese, lettuce and onions, sandwiched between a toasted bun, and finished with special sauce.

The bed of chips underneath the burger are fried to perfection and salted just enough to keep you coming back for more before you bite back into the burger. You can choose between a few beers on tap to go with the meal, so we went for the 'nice cola sour', essentially a sour coke bottle lolly in alcoholic drink form.

Burger lovers of Preston and surrounds, head down to Tallboy and Moose on a Wednesday night to enjoy this special!

FUSE Darebin

Darebin Arts

FUSE Darebin returns in Spring 2022 for another instalment of the contemporary, multi-arts festival. Twice a year, FUSE provides a platform for local artists and performers from Darebin to help transform the city into a hub of arts and creativity.

Darebin's streets, parks, venues, theatres, galleries and public spaces become transformative zones for attendees to experience art, culture and creativity.

September 3rd sees the Spring edition kick off with Ganbu Gulin, a free event that welcomes all residents, old and new, onto Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country. Head down from 2pm to 7pm to enjoy the welcome as FUSE begins.

With plenty of different art to experience including films, music, and food. There'll be something for everyone this Spring at FUSE. We're looking forward to the 'Things Will Be Different: Documentary & Walking Tour' which explores the impact of losing one’s home and the important role public housing plays in our communities, documenting residents as they are forced to relocate from the Walker Street public housing estate in Northcote, Melbourne when it is sold for private redevelopment.

FUSE Darebin is running from September 3rd to September 18th, check out their website for all the details and come down to the City of Darebin to experience everything the festival has to offer.

Sport in Preston

NPL3: Preston Lions FC vs Box Hill FC

Preston Lions FC

Saturday the 20th of August 2022 was an exciting day for Preston Lions FC and the suburb of Preston. The Lions were playing for the title in their final match for the NPL 3 season, and all they needed was a win over 9th-placed Box Hill to secure the title for season 2022.

With everything to play for in their final match of the season, the Lions went about their work, showing why they've been the team to beat this year. They swept aside Box Hill in a dominant 3-0 display of high-quality football.

Melbourne City, who finished in second place, would have been praying for a Preston FC loss to give them a chance at securing the title, but as has been the case all year, Preston stood up when was required to bring the title home.

Nuh Sehavdic opened the scoring at the 30-minute mark with a goal to set up the Lions to win, and Christopher Davies put the result beyond doubt with a pair of goals at the 53rd and 56th-minute mark.

Celebrations ensue as the Lions lock in the title, and bring glory to the suburb of Preston for season 2022!
